Tips to Achieve a High Score in IELTS
Listening
Before the IELTS Listening test:
- Listen to all the news channels, videos, movies in English and read papers, articles, and other material to help you with English and your speed.
- Familiarize yourself with the concepts of listening, for example, multiple-choice questions, matching, and labeling.
During the IELTS Listening test:
- Listen to the audio instructions before each section carefully because those are not printed in the test booklets.
- There are a specified number of words that are to be written in the answer booklet. Do not ignore the instructions for the same. If you write more words than required, you lose marks for it.
- Before listening, read the questions. 30 to 60 seconds are given for reading each question
- If you underline the keywords in the question, it will make it easier for you to answer it. However, look for synonyms and paraphrases too.
- Prediction of answers is easy if you try to visualize the situation and try to work on it by keeping yourself in that particular situation.
- The negatives in the paragraph or questions should be paid special attention to (not, never, none, no one, barely, hardly, scarcely, etc.)
- There is a 30-second pause given after each section. Utilize that time to check your answers for that section.
- Transfer all your answers from the booklet to the answer sheet, during the 10 minutes.
- Try to answer all the questions and make sure you don’t leave any of them unanswered. Even if you don’t know the answers to the questions, try to make your best guess and not leave the spaces blank.
- Correct grammar and correct spelling are key to getting good grades in IELTS. So, make sure you use the correct form and spelling.
Reading
Before the IELTS Reading test:
- Reading is a great habit that can help you get better at speed and pronunciation, both. While reading, don’t forget to underline the uncommon words, this can help you with your vocabulary.
- Try guessing the meaning of an uncommon or unknown word through the context of the paragraph. If you cannot, check out the meaning from the dictionary and try to use it in your daily communication to retain it.
- The writing sections can usually be related to current affairs. The best way to deal with them is by reading newspapers daily.
- Academic or General Training Reading Training Reading-type questions can be dealt with easily if you make yourself familiar with the type of questions.
- You have to be a fast reader to read three passages and answer 40 questions in a mere time of 60 minutes. To help you with your speed, do practice reading within a time frame.
- Skimming, scanning, and intensive reading are great techniques and should be practiced for a faster speed in reading.
During the IELTS Reading test:
- The instructions are given in the practice test and the main exam can be different. So it’s always better to go through the instructions before you start the exam.
- You can always use the test booklet for making notes/ or underlying the keywords in the passages to help you with your answers.
- Use the given time wisely. If you spend more than a minute trying to get the answer correct and if you still don’t have it, skip the answer and move to the next one. After answering all the questions, if you still have some time left, get back to the unanswered question.
- Make sure you have transferred all answers onto the answer sheet. Do not leave empty spaces even if you don’t know the answer; take your best guess.
Writing
Before the IELTS Writing test:
- If you are planning to take the IELTS Academic module, look for model graph/chart/diagram descriptions (model Writing Task 1 answers) online and analyze the way they have organized the ideas, and for their vocabulary.
- If you are planning to take the IELTS General Training module, look for model letters (model Writing Task 1 answers) online and analyze them for their organization of ideas and vocabulary.
- Find model IELTS essays online and analyze them in terms of task response, essay structure, coherence, vocabulary, and sentence variety.
During the IELTS Writing test:
- Underline the keywords and analyze each task carefully.
- Do not use words that are big and powerful but you are unsure of their meaning. Use your own words. Simple English, is much more suitable for you at this moment, other than big words which you are unsure about.
If you plan to take the IELTS Academic Module:
- Make sure that you have understood the ‘essay question’. Whether you are asked to give an opinion, to compare them, to discuss causes and/or effects, or to present some solutions to problems?
- Try to keep your words within the required number. Your main task should be good quality content rather than quantity.
- Revising is a very important part of the exam. While writing the paragraphs and answers we tend to make some mistakes either grammatically or spellings due to the shortage of time. So keeping a track of time is important so that you can manage to take out 5 to 10 minutes for the same.
If you plan to take the IELTS General Training Module:
- Plan your way of action first. Then start writing your letters and essay after you have a definite course of action.
- In writing task 1, keep the minimum writing skills to 150 but limit your writing to 200.
- Try to keep some time for revising the answers of your writing part. Leave about 3 minutes for revising Writing Task 1 and at least 5 minutes for revising Writing Task 2. Keeping track of the time can help you with time management and also help you with sometimes the need for revising.
- Write a minimum of 250 words but try to limit your essay to 350 words in Writing Task 2.
Speaking
Before the IELTS Speaking test:
- Practice speaking in English as much as possible.
- Reading books, watching movies and TV, listening to the radio, preferably in English can help a great deal. While reading, watching, or listening, think about why you like or dislike it.
- Before entering the exam center, try to speak with other students in English. This can help in switching to English more easily during the exam.
During the IELTS Speaking test:
- Keeping calm and relaxed will always help you give better performance due to the positive state of mind.
- Give extended responses to the questions that are asked in the speaking section.
- The best you can do is answer to the best of your ability. While answering do not give too much attention to vocabulary, because at this moment clear and more précised answers are needed.
- If you make a mistake, correct yourself. It’s okay making mistakes and owning up to them.
- If there is a miscommunication, or you do not understand anything said by the examiner, clarify or repeat the question to confirm it.
- Overusing gestures won’t help in a good personality judgment, because it is usually seen as a sign of nervousness or anxiousness. So try to keep a check on your body language.
- Answer the questions on point. Do not get distracted from the topic.
- Use semi-neutral or semi-formal language, because the exams are a formal situation.
Preparing for any exam is a continuous process that requires time and effort. Every practice test that you take, every listening, reading, and writing activity you complete and every speaking practice you undertake improves your hold on the language and adds to your confidence during the exam.
