Amuthavalli Manivannan hails from Tenkasi district in Tamil Nadu. Physiotherapy was her professional career, for she had wanted to be a doctor about three decades ago after her schooling. But life had other plans. She could not get admission into MBBS even though she had wanted to do so; hence, she opted for physiotherapy. Life went ahead with parting from childhood dreams-post getting married, having a family and pursuing a career.
Her daughter, M. Samyuktha, was preparing for NEET under the CBSE board. Before long, as Samyuktha started preparation for NEET UG 2025, Amuthavalli was able to observe the commitment her daughter was putting into her studies. Gradually, a spark that had been left dormant for a very long time got awakened in Amuthavalli. Seeing her daughter put so much passion into her studies, Amuthavalli thought it was high time she gave her dream a second chance.
Overcoming the Age Barrier
For a neurotypical human, the thought of sitting for a medical entrance examination at 49 would have seemed outright intimidating. But age never mattered for Amuthavalli. Once she had set her mind on something, she gave it her whole heart and soul. Nor did she give her age, her responsibilities, or her fear of failure any consideration, for these could not dampen her spirit.
It had been over three decades since she had read books, so naturally, the syllabus for NEET seemed overwhelmingly difficult, in both content and format. According to Amuthavalli, “The curriculum was very different from what I studied in school. I was so overwhelmed at the very beginning.” But she drew power from her daughter and went ahead with preparations using the same books as Samyuktha.
A Study Partner Like No Other
While most aspiring NEET candidates would just study alone or with friends, Samyuktha had an unusual and dedicated study partner in her mother. The mother-daughter duo converted their home into a small coaching centre. Samyuktha would bring study material and books for the NEET coaching imparted at classes to revise with her. She would study her lessons and then share her notes and explanation with her mother.
Samyuktha recalled, “I needed to have someone with whom I could revise the syllabus, and my mom became that person. It was beneficial for both of us. She was always inquisitive and determined, which gave me more of a push.”
Family Support Makes the Difference
Behind a successful woman is an atmosphere of support from the family, and this story is no exception. Amuthavalli’s husband, a lawyer and Samyuktha’s father, may not have assisted in the cooking and cleaning, but made all possible arrangements for his wife. The ambience in the house had become one of learning and encouragement.
Although Amuthavalli herself claimed, “My husband and daughter supported me throughout the journey. Without their encouragement, I wouldn’t have been able to prepare or clear the exam.”
Results That Spoke Volumes
Emotion ran high on the day of the results in the house of Manivannan. Amuthavalli secured 147 marks under the name Divyang (PWD) and was allotted a seat at Government Medical College, Virudhunagar, near her hometown. Having waited for over a couple of decades for such an opportunity, it was a dream come true.
Samyuktha scored a commendable 450 marks and was also attached to a government medical college. However, she did not want to study alongside her mother in the same college. “I want to take admission through the general category and pursue my journey independently,” she said with pride and a mature voice.
Breaking Stereotypes and Setting Examples
Amuthavalli’s achievement is not a strictly personal one; rather, it is symbolic. Here, stereotypical theories were broken in terms of age, gender, and traditional roles. In a society where a woman gives priority to her home and ends up sacrificing every hope she had of achieving something, she’s shown that it’s never too late to give it all another shot.
