From Vegetable Vendor to UPSC: An Inspiring Journey of Manoj Kumar Rai

Hard work eventually brings success. The saying fits well with the inspiring success story of Manoj Kumar Rai, a man whose sheer grit and determination changed him from a humble vegetable seller to an officer of the Indian Ordnance Factories Service. In this article by TheHinduzone, we will discuss the Inspiring Journey of Manoj Kumar Rai. His very existence is an inspiration for anyone who dares to envision anything big amid all odds. Today, he is a testimony to success for anyone who is determined, guided, and willing to put in the required effort to reach the heights of success.
The formative years of his life were credibly troubled with everyday struggles, but at the same time, they made him learn many honest lessons, and life had offered him responsibilities so heavy for any child of his age. The struggles were extreme in situations wherein, at times, he witnessed two square meals being a distanced luxury. On the other hand, as the situation with socioeconomic factors increasingly remedied with time, an instinct within him surged to go ahead with the tougher option, which would eventually put an end to his family’s suffering.
He decided to relocate to Delhi for some construction work, thinking that the capital city should have better avenues to find employment. However, despite his best efforts, getting a properly paying job eluded him. He eked out a livelihood selling vegetable carts and eggs on the streets of Delhi. He also took to cleaning floors in some offices to bridge his everyday expenses. Long, tiring days but surely, Manoj held onto his spirit. He understood these small jobs were just temporary stepping stones toward a brighter future.

JNU – Source of UPSC Inspiration

His life changed, taking a new dimension when he joined the Jawaharlal Nehru University as a delivery man, the first time he heard about the UPSC exam. While delivering goods to the university, Manoj spoke to some students, and that was when he got to know about the UPSC exam and how it changes people’s lives.
It was at this time when he knew he could not be confined to this life of living with petty jobs. This was a dream, an aspiration, to do something bigger. This was to change his fate, and the UPSC examination seemed to be the right thing. The students at JNU motivated him to continue his studies and take up the UPSC examination, explaining how it could open up better avenues in life. This made him think even more about moving beyond his limitations, and he was determined to take an initial step toward realizing his dreams.

The Journey for UPSC: Education and Preparation

To better his life, Manoj got admitted to the Bachelor in Arts program of Shri Aurobindo College, graduated soon afterwards, and immediately thereafter took to the task of preparing for UPSC. He ran to Patna, where he sought the advice of one of the most renowned UPSC teachers, Ras Bihari Prasad Singh, whose impact gave direction to the exam-related mentality of Manoj.
The preparation is not easy. Preparation for UPSC is extremely arduous, and Manoj wasn’t an exception to that. It demands of a person great discipline, consistency and hard work. But Manoj has made up his mind to face this challenge boldly. He committed himself completely to his studies, and the journey began with one aim: to crack the UPSC exam.

The First Attempt: A Bitter Blow to the Gut

Manoj had been making serious preparations for three years before he took his first step towards taking the UPSC exam. He had pinned all his hopes and optimism in this attempt, but it didn’t prove beneficial. He failed. It was a severe defeat, but not difficult enough for Manoj to completely break down with it. Failure is just a part of this tune, he would say, that teaches valuable lessons. He didn’t give up; instead, it cemented his resolution to come back with a bang after analyzing his mistakes.

Second Attempt: Struggles with English

Manoj was not free from the first attempt. He went ahead for his second attempt when suddenly he got in front of another brick wall. It was English. He knew that he had put a lot of effort into passing, but in the end, he could never clear the exam. Learning the entire language seemed an insurmountable task for those whose English was not good enough.
The downfall was unfortunate, but Manoj didn’t back out into despair. He understood that perseverance was the name of the game and continued trying until he had achieved his target.

The Third Attempt: A Blinking Hope

Manoj had not long since his second failure. With fresh energies and determination, he made his third attempt. This time, he could somehow manage to clear the preliminary exam- it being a big thing in itself. However, he again faltered during the main exam. Although he was inching closer to success, it appeared too far away.
Despite all these setbacks, Manoj was never ready to quit. Past sufferings determined for him what resilience is all about, and he knew that success could only be snatched by continuously pushing forward. It was during this phase that he began to reflect on his mistakes and treatment of his preparation scheme. He understood that to crack the exam, he had to be smarter and more focused.

Year 2010: UPSC Victory

The Big Break. It was after years of hard work and integrity with mistakes that Manoj Kumar Rai’s perseverance rewarded him. He secured the 870th rank in the UPSC Civil Services Examination, cracking his long-cherished goal. Success, however, is not personal but a victory for all those who face adversity in life. It proved that no matter what one’s origins are or how one’s efforts towards the goal may seem, they can be achieved with genuine commitment and a correct approach.
Manoj’s story inspires millions of people who aspire to clear the UPSC examinations. It demonstrates that the most elusive ends are achievable through perseverance, consistency, and suitable guidance.
