A Challenging Start

Divya Tanwar had a challenging life. Being born in a poor family, financial trouble and personal calamities began hounding her from a very young age. Her father died when she was still a child, and after this tragic event, Divya’s mother was left to care for her and her siblings. While the mother herself had to fight through life for her family’s sustenance, she had turned out to be the strength behind Divya, who by then had begun to feel a sense of responsibility instilled in her by her mother. Soon, the loss of her father at a very early age could have proved to be traumatic, but with utmost maturity, Divya chose to transform her grief into hard work with a determination to do something worthwhile. She realized rather early in her life that her mother needed her support, and the only way to give her the true life she deserved, free of all worries, was through her education and, thereafter, a successful career.

The Spark of Inspiration From SDM

While still in school, Divya had an occasion that inspired her interest in civil services. The school had set up an occasion wherein the SDM was invited as the chief guest; witnessing the authority and confidence with which the SDM spoke inspired admiration within Divya for the officer’s position in society and respect accorded by others. There and then, she gave herself a promise: to become someone whom others would inspire and respect, such as an SDM.
This interaction left a lasting impression on her mind, giving birth to her desire to enter IAS. She realized that being an IAS officer was not only about enjoying the privileges of a dignified occupation but also about being the kind of person who could create great opportunities in the lives of others and earn respect from those around her. This dream was her guiding light.

The Road to UPSC

Divya’s journey toward becoming an IAS officer was not without hurdles. After completing her school education, she joined Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, where she was doing excellent in academics. Her urge for doing something exceptional kept blooming, and it was during her college days that she first got to know about the UPSC exam. She got quite fascinated with the idea of the civil services examination and started studying about it – the syllabus, the eligibility criteria, and the preparation strategy. After much thought and self-introspection, she decided to go for the UPSC exam.
In 2021, Divya appeared in the UPSC examination for the first time. At just 21 years of age, she was successful in turning the tables and got an impressive rank of 438. This commendable work in her very first attempt was a clear manifestation of her intellect, hard work, and commitment to that aim. After the result declaration, she underwent training for the IPS. However, this was not the fulfilment of her aspirations. Divya dreams only of being an IAS officer, and she is not willing to accept anything less.

The Second Try: Overcoming Obstacles and Realizing the Dream

Divya’s motivation was so strong that even after her successful qualification for the IPS, she wanted to serve the country at a higher level and make more of an impact. Her very first attempt in UPSC had filled her with the confidence that her dreams could come true, but Divya knew for sure that now she had to sweat a little harder to reach her ultimate destination.
It was her second shot at it that ultimately paid off. She managed to crack the UPSC examination once again, but this time with a fantastic rank of 105th. Her success story is one with which many aspiring civil servants identify -those who are undergoing a rigorous preparation process. The message Divya had for them was pure: hard work, perseverance, and goal orientation will take you places.
Divya did not take help from any coaching during her preparation instead but rather focused on self-study with maximum sourcing of the internet. Watching toppers’ interviews, she learned from their strategies. She also studied NCERT’s textbooks to develop a solid foundation for the exam. Despite a lack of resources and aid from others, Divya proved that self-reliance and discipline were all it required to crack one of the toughest examinations in her country.

The Most Important Learning from the Struggles

One of the greatest aspects of her success is also the fact that Divya has been able to face and endure the pressures and struggles brought her way. From a tender age, she was aware of the hardships her family was going through; rather than sulking, she converted the experiences into the drive and fuel to push her forward. For instance, negative thoughts did not rule her conscious mind. Whenever she found herself feeling down, the thought that came to her was of her mother’s sacrifices and the dreams she had conceived since childhood.
Divya’s family has supported her much in her success. Contributing in every step were her mother, brothers, and sisters. Be it emotional support in tough times or helping maintain a disciplined routine, Divya’s family was there for her. She recognizes in them one of the most significant reasons that enabled her to push along even through the most challenging times in preparation.

The Role of the Internet in Preparation

The collective mold of the Internet stamps on the entire preparation of all competitive exams. The facilities of going to expensive coaching centers were not available to her, but the ocean of knowledge available online proved invaluable in her preparation. Watching online lectures, reading articles, and accessing study materials on various platforms helped Divya groom herself for the UPSC exam efficiently and thoroughly.
Besides going online, Divya was very much focused on reading NCERT books, providing her with a solid grounding on topics important for the UPSC exams. The strategy revolved around understanding concepts in-depth and did not rest merely on cramming, which eventually proved successful.

The Power of Positive Thinking

Divya believes in positive thinking very much. Keeping optimistic even in adversity is the motto she preaches. Advise those preparing for exams not to allow themselves to be dragged down by negative thoughts and the apprehensions of possible failure. Focus on the strengths, work hard, and put in faith. This is reflected by her life journey. It has not been smooth to reach this point, but she has been able to set herself on the goals for which she will win.
