Early Life and Family Background

Eshwar Gurjar was born in a lower middle-class family. His father, Suwalal Gurjar, is a farmer and his mother, Sukhi Devi, is a housewife. Eshwar’s parents did not compromise on their children’s education despite financial constraints. Being the eldest child, Eshwar has two younger sisters. This is a story that speaks at the very core of the life of a person who has endured failures in life and then made it to success.

The Stumble: Failure of 10th Grade

Another bitter experience that Eshwar faced was in 2011 when he failed the 10th grade board examinations. Many students would simply have given up all hopes of studying further, but Eshwar’s father encouraged him to face the disappointment and move ahead. After failing, he thought of quitting his studies. But the words of his father-“Don’t give up, don’t lose hope” encouraged him to reattempt. For him, this was the first lesson on the way to success: failure is not the end but a path towards growth.

The very next year, in 2012, he gave his 10th exam again and passed it on his second try, scoring a total of 54%. Although it was not an extraordinary pass, for the emotional, mental, and physical upheaval that it entailed, it still counted for him as a great achievement. Later, he also completed his 12th grade with 68% marks, which was a very encouraging sign of his ability to rise again after failure.

Achieving Success in Life

He did a graduation course at MDS University. Having completed his Bachelor’s degree, he joined the Indian government education system as a third-grade teacher in 2019. His job was at a government primary school in a small village known as Rupra, which is relatively close to the place where he lives. A teacher but still in his mind was the chase of clearing the UPSC exam and furthering education.

While a majority of the people would be happy to teach, Eshwar was busy preparing for further successful UPSC examinations. It was quite a task to juggle between work and life and preparing for such a competitive examination, but his determination and commitment were unquestionable.

The UPSC Journey: New Challenge

The life of Eshwar is full of challenges as he attempted to enter one of the most reputed Indian examinations- the UPSC exam. He tried his fate with UPSC in 2019, but he failed in clearing the Prelims. However, the initial dismay was not going to upset him in this course; it instead made his focus sharper. In 2020, he reached the Interview stage but still did not ace it. In 2021, disappointment visited him again when he failed once more. By this time, he had faced three failed attempts consecutively, and a lot of people around him suggested to him to quit, but he wasn’t one to listen.

What he really did, though, was toughen himself for more because every failure turned out to him as a lesson to learn and grow. He believed in the power of people who could persist and said to himself, “Failures do not end; they are part of the process of success.” It was this attitude that helped him sail through the toughest periods of his life.

The Breakthrough: UPSC 2022

Bouncing back after three failures was the real therapy for Eshwar, as he opted to keep his morale high with his preparation for the 2022 UPSC Civil Services Exam. Finally came the result of sleepless nights spent endlessly preparing the reward. This year, he secured an outstanding 644th rank in UPSC. Not from someone who had failed many times before, but this was a big turn. Eshwar can now only claim to be one of the successful candidates. The stirrer of all has yet to come for him, her mom said.

His journey through failure in 10th grade into becoming someone having a respectable position in UPSC pothole was highly motivating. His success was not only his, for the success of all those who believe in hard work even when the odds are stacked against them.

Improving His Rank: The Results of the 2023 UPSC

Eshwar indeed did not reach his goal and did not stop with what he achieved. He had tried everything one can learn from experiences in previous attempts and took the battle for the 2023 UPSC test yet again. The constant hard work and dedication paid off once again as his rank improved considerably; he secured the 555th position in the exam. The rank improvement of 101 ranks within a year was proof of his hard work and the continuous changes he made in his preparation strategy.

His triumph was met with exuberant joy in his village. The villagers supported him and celebrated his victory, and now, Eshwar was a son of pride for the whole community. No more was he just a teacher now; he became an inspiration for each whose destiny had once failed and assumed it was at an end.

Present Status: IRS Training and IPS Dream

Currently training in the Indian Revenue Service in Nagpur after being selected for IRS after claiming the rank of 644 in the 2022 UPSC exam, Eshwar is on his way to realizing an ambition he has nurtured for many years: joining the IPS. Rank 555 in the 2023 exam places him closer to realizing his dreams.

Recently, Eshwar spoke to NDTV Rajasthan about his journey and aspirations. He specifically stated that pride for his IRS selection remains, but his dream is to serve the nation as an IPS officer, and with determination and hard work, that dream is not far from him.

A Message for Aspirants

Eshwar’s journey remains a lesson for all such students, who, irrespective of failure, low marks, or examinations, have faced such adversities in their lives. Whether you fail in the 10th or 12th examinations or multiple times, he proves that the future is not defined by the failures which one faces.

Eshwar’s tale teaches us determination, toil, patience, and the spirit of having a go to make your dreams come true. Never lose hope; when you fall, rise again. Every time you fail, it is a learning opportunity.

On a following note, students who find themselves facing difficulties, Eshwar says, “Don’t let failure define you. Keep your goal in focus and work hard for it. Obstacles will come your way, but perseverance will help you through them. Just keep going.”
